American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.

Minnesota Chapter

We would like to introduce you to the Minnesota Chapter of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. We are an organization of mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the service of our country. Our children died while on active duty in the US military or died as a result of such service. Although we are deeply saddened by the loss of our child we are also deeply proud of their service and sacrifice. Together we remember our children and carry on in their memories.

American Gold Star Mothers was founded by Grace Darling Seibold after the death of her son in World War I. Mrs. Seibold began volunteering soon after her son first went off to war by visiting returning servicemen in the hospital. After her son died, she devoted her time and efforts to not only working in the hospital but extending the hand of friendship to other mothers whose sons had lost their lives in military service.

After years of planning, on June 4, 1928, twenty-five mothers met in Washington, DC to establish the national organization, American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. Today there are Chapters available throughout the country run by and for Gold Star Mothers.

The organization was named after the Gold Star that families hung in their windows during WWI in honor of the deceased veteran. A Blue Star was hung in the window for each member of the family who was in the service. A Gold Star replaced the Blue Star if the family member was not returning home. Today a Gold Star pin is awarded to family members by the military in recognition of their loved one's service and ultimate sacrifice. Thus we are called Gold Star Families. American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. and Gold Star Wives of America, Inc. are official Chartered organizations. We are the Minnesota Chapter of AGSM, Inc.

We are an organization of mothers whose sons or daughters served and died that this world might be a better place in which to live. In memory of our child's service we volunteer in many aspects of our community. We stand tall and proud by honoring our children, assisting our veterans, supporting our nation, and healing with each other. This is accomplished through many different activities in our communities.

If you know of a mother or are a mother who has lost a child in the service to our country and would like to be a member of the MN Chapter of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. please check out our "Join" page or contact Barbara Farrell at No one else can understand what she/you are going through like another mother. We will do our best to welcome her/you. Husbands and children of members of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc may join as Associate Members using the same application. Associate members pay no dues, hold no offices and may not vote.

The success of our organization continues because of the bond of mutual love, sympathy, and support of the many loyal, capable, and patriotic mothers who, while sharing their grief and their pride, have channeled their time, efforts, and gifts to lessening the pain of others. As we move forward with our lives and find our "new normal" we work to make our children's sacrifices remembered.
